I’m thrilled to be able to share with you today that my second novel is being published next year by Mākaro Press! Here’s their announcement.

In the release month of our 2025 Mākaro novel EMPATHY by Bryan Walpert, we are delighted to announce our 2026 novel will be AND HOW ARE THINGS WITH YOU by Wellington author Mia Farlane. Today, 10 September, is World Suicide Prevention Day and Farlane's novel is about a woman who, for her own reasons, is researching suicide – a story that employs the bleak humour and dry observations of human beings that readers loved in Farlane's first novel FOOTNOTES TO SEX, published in the UK by Viking/Penguin Books. A book that British broadcaster Bidisha described as ‘Seinfeld meets Dorothy Parker over a late-night hot drink'.

It’s been a while since my first novel came out. Don’t give up before the (next) miracle happens’, as my friends say. Not that I could. Writing is my life. Anyway, it’s happened — and I am going to call that a miracle: my next novel has found its ideal publisher.

Thank you to everyone who’s supported me over the last fifteen years to get here. And thank you to Mākaro publisher Mary McCallum!

Above is a photo of me with some reading material that the main character of AND HOW ARE THINGS WITH YOU would find interesting.
