Are you subscribed to the Farlane on Writing newsletter? If so, you’re in the December draw to win a copy of A Counter of Moons (Steele Roberts Aotearoa, 2025) signed by the author Iona Winter, who has kindly offered this koha/gift.

A raw, tender, straight-talking memoir, with poetry, about the her musician son Reuben’s death. It includes Iona’s diary entries from this time, and her reflections from later.

Iona Winter says: The people I’ve met through my creative work on suicide bereavement have reflected the need for open kōrero (conversation), p130.

At the back of the book are endnotes with multiple references to other writers’ work, a helpful index, and a glossary of words in te reo Māori.

Listen to Iona reading from her poetry collection, In the shape of his hand lay a river (Elixir & Star Press, 2024).

Farlane on Writing will be at least every 2 months in 2026, with book draws across the year for subscribers.
